Muḥammad ibn Sanān is a disputed narrator, with numerous hadiths attributed to him in Shiʿi hadith collections. His narrations in jurisprudence are so significant that disregarding them would result in the alteration of many religious rulings. Thus, evaluating his reliability through ʿIlm al-Rijāl (biographical evaluation) is essential. Among the relevant material are narrations attributed to the Imams (pbut) that are debated for their implications—whether they praise or discredit him. Additionally, criticisms have been raised regarding the chains of transmission (Sanad) of some of these narrations. Using a descriptive-analytical method and library resources, the authors address two key questions: 1) According to the author of Qabasāt min ʿIlm al-Rijāl, do the narrations about Muḥammad ibn Sanān indicate his authentication (Tawthīq) or discreditation (Taʿḍīf)? 2) What critiques can be leveled against this perspective? The author of Qabasāt examines these narrations and adopts a stance of suspension (Tawaqquf) regarding Muḥammad ibn Sanān, arguing that biographical evaluations must rely on the opinions of rijāl scholars. This position, however, renders descriptive narrations ineffective and overlooks existing disagreements among rijāl experts themselves. Moreover, through a critical examination of the chains and contents of narrations about Muhammad ibn Sanān, his reliability has been concluded.
