There have been numerous debates among scholars of Islamic schools of thought—both Imami and Sunni—regarding the faith or disbelief of Abū Ṭālib. One of the narrations cited by some Sunni scholars to prove Abū Ṭālib's disbelief is the narration of Ḍaḥḍāḥ. The fundamental question of this research is whether such a narration, which is exclusively documented in Sunni sources, can be cited in light of the verses of the Holy Quran. Given that safeguarding and preserving the dignity of every Muslim, especially the status of the companions of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), is a religious duty, examining this narration based on clear and conclusive evidence is essential. The authors have employed a descriptive-analytical method using library sources to investigate the narration of Ḍaḥḍāḥ, with the aim of conducting a content analysis based on Sunni sources, with an emphasis on Sunni commentaries, and using the Holy Quran as the criterion. The findings indicate that this narration is in conflict with the Holy Quran. Given the clear evidence for the faith of that great companion, such a narration—due to its explicit contradiction with Quranic verses and the authentic and emphatic recommendation of the Holy Prophet (pbuh) to reject what contradicts the Book—is deemed unacceptable, fabricated, and rejected. However, it is necessary to note that he (Abū Ṭālib) would sometimes conceal his faith in order to protect the Noble Prophet (pbuh) more effectively.
