The historical evolution of the doctrines and creeds of religions and sects has consistently occupied the attention of scholars and has gained further prominence in the contemporary era. Beyond the Orientalists who have discussed the gradual development of Shīʿa doctrines, this perspective has also emerged in the works of certain Muslim thinkers, including Hosein Modarressi Tabataba'i. In his book, Crisis and Consolidation in the Formative Period of Shi'ite Islam, he seeks to demonstrate the historical evolution of the fundamental principles of Imāmī Shīʿa thought amidst the conflict between the two fronts of the Ghulāt (extremists) and the Muqaṣṣirūn (short-fallers). He concludes that certain Shīʿa beliefs concerning the Imamate were influenced by extremist thought. The objective of the current paper is to scrutinize some of the primary conclusions of this work using a descriptive-analytical methodology. The findings indicate that the examined inferences are flawed due to several factors: the mismatch between conclusions and their supporting evidence; the reliance on incomplete reports; the tendency to generalize from a single narration while ignoring a broader corpus of traditions; and the dependence on literal translations of phrases while neglecting the historical context and the narrative setting (siyāq) of the reports. Furthermore, the work exhibits a disregard for the element of Taqiyya (pious dissimulation), a failure to recognize the historical semantics of concepts in the early centuries, and a faulty analogy between the conditions of the formative period and the contemporary era. The study concludes that such methodologies of inference and deduction cannot serve as the basis for a robust and rigorous theory
