The saying “موتوا قبل أن تموتوا” (Die before you Die) is a Mursal Hadith (Tradition with an incomplete chain of narration) which has primarily become famous among Gnostics (ʿUrafā’). It has served as the basis for the formation of the concept of “Voluntary Death” among them and has acquired a distinctive status in Islamic mystical literature. Despite this narration's attribution to the Prophet(PBUH), some scholars contend that it is a Sufi fabrication. This study, conducted using an analytical method and a library-based approach, seeks to elucidate the issuance or non-issuance of this saying from the Messenger of God(PBUH), based on the principles of Hadith comprehension and criticism. While undertaking a content analysis and apprehending the intent and interpretations of this Tradition, the author is positioned to demonstrate the following conclusion: Although the general tenor of the debated Narrations acceptable and consistent with Qur'anic and narrative teachings, source-critical examinations, content analyses, historical evaluations, and the appearance of signs of distortion (taḥrīf) and textual corruption (taṣḥīf) within its text raise serious doubt regarding the authenticity, and even the very status as a Hadith, of this saying.
