“Sorrow” is one of the significant human states, regarding which a saying from the Prophet Muḥammad(pbuh) has been transmitted through Imam Reza(pbuh). ). The study of this hadith is important due to objections raised concerning its transmission in Shiʿi narrational sources. In this research, utilizing a descriptive-analytical method and based on library resources, after examining the text and document of the hadith and clarifying its terms, various possible interpretations of its purport have been evaluated. The findings of this study indicate that in Sunni sources, the hadith is transmitted as “تَعَوّذُوا بِاللّهِ مِن جُبِّ الحُزنِ taʿawwadhu billāh min jubbi al-ḥuzn” and is accompanied by a continuation, whereas in Imami (Shiʿi) hadith sources, the phrase “تَعَوّذُوا بِاللّهِ مِن حُبِّ الحُزنِ taʿawwadhu billāh min ḥubb al-ḥuzn” appears without any addition. The chains of transmission of these two narrations differ between Sunni and Imami sources, and the mere similarity of the two phrases does not justify the conclusion that the narration entered Shiʿi tradition from Sunni sources or that a scribal error occurred. However, the chain of transmission (Sanad) of both narrations in Shiʿi and Sunni sources is weak. For the narration found in Shiʿi sources, at least two reasonable interpretations can be mentioned: 1) Love of purposeless depression and sorrow is a great danger; 2) Love, in its specific sense, is of the nature of sorrow, and one must seek refuge in God from it. Therefore, the objection that the narration in Imami hadith sources lacks a correct meaning is unfounded.
