The Sunnah, after the Qur’an, is the most important source for understanding Islam, as numerous jurisprudential, theological, and ethical teachings are derived from it. A fundamental issue in approaching the Sunnah is logically defining its relationship with the Qur’an. Two main perspectives exist: the parity and non-parity views of the Sunnah relative to the Qur’an. These perspectives influence the functions attributed to the Sunnah, namely affirmation (Taqrīr), explanation (Tabyīn), and innovation regarding Qur’anic teachings. The non-parity view rejects the third function, innovation. Beyond the foundational perspective, the innovation function faces several challenges that make its acceptance difficult. This study aims to elucidate these challenges. The findings indicate that the innovation function encounters problems such as the dependence of the Sunnah’s authority on the Qur’an, conflict with the finality of prophethood, incompatibility with the Qur’an’s comprehensiveness, contradiction with the concept of abrogation denial, and tensions with certain narrations. Using an analytical-descriptive method, this research clarifies the relationship of these issues to the innovation function of the Sunnah and concludes by supporting the non-parity view of the Sunnah with the Qur’an and expressing skepticism about the innovation function.
