In bibliographic catalogues (kutub al-fahāris), extensive Hadith compilations have been referenced, the major portion of which have been lost over time. Given that one of the criteria utilized by early scholars for the validation of Traditions is the source (maṣdar) of those narrations, the existence of these primary sources and references is crucial. Therefore, the most essential step is the methodological reconstruction of the lost works. Ḥammād ibn ʿUthmān, recognized as a jurist and Traditionist of the second generation of the Companions of Consensus (Aṣhāb al-Ijmāʿ), produced a book which has served as a reference for numerous Shi’a Hadith compilations, including the Kutub al-Arbaʿah (The Four Canonical Shia Hadith Collections), and having been the source for issuing legal rulings from past eras up to the present. This specific work, designated merely as "Kitāb" (Book) in the Fihrist of Shaykh al-Ṭūsī, was extant until the time of Ibn al-Ṭāwūs, who referred to it as an "Aṣl" (original source). Consequently, the reconstruction of the Kitāb is likely to be accompanied by the revival of one of the original Uṣūl. This research, employing bibliographic methodology to reconstruct Ḥammād ’s compilation, has determined that the term "Kitāb" for Ḥammād ’s Traditions in Shaykh Ṭūsī’s Fihrist is a general designation that encompasses the Aṣl. Furthermore, having analyzed the accumulated evidence, the attribution of a number of distinct narrative books—such as the Kitāb al-Ṣalāh (Book of Prayer), Kitāb al-Zakāt (Book of Alms), and others—to Ḥammād is confirmed.
