Mudmar narrations are reports in which the narrator, instead of explicitly mentioning the name of the Infallible Imam (A.S.), employs a third-person pronoun, a matter that complicates the verification of both the continuity of the chain of transmission and the authenticity of the narration. Imamī jurists and traditionists have adopted various approaches toward such narrations, including unconditional acceptance, absolute rejection, and differentiation among different types of mudmar reports. Nevertheless, most existing studies have primarily focused on rijālī and isnād-based analyses, while the role of internal textual indicators in identifying the referent of the implicit attribution has received less systematic attention.
The present study aims to clarify the function of textual evidence in establishing the issuance of mudmar narrations from the Infallible Imams (A.S.) through an examination of juridical mudmar reports in Wasāʾil al-Shīʿa. Employing a descriptive-analytical method and relying on library-based data collection, the study demonstrates that many such narrations contain indicators that significantly reduce the likelihood of attribution to non-Infallibles. These indicators include exclusive forms of address, questions conventionally directed only to an Imam, and responses containing complex legal rulings, unseen matters, or references to the tradition of previous Imams. Accordingly, textual indicators, alongside sanad and historical evidence, can play an important role in generating reasonable confidence in the issuance of a narration from an Infallible Imam.
