The present study aims to resolve the apparent conflict between Islamic ethics regarding the prohibition of falsehood and the military necessity of deceiving the enemy. It seeks to examine the semantic and jurisprudential aspects of the maxim “Al-Harb Khud’ah” (War is Deceit), with a specific focus on Adi b. Hatim’s narration in Al-Kafi, and to evaluate its capacity and application in modern military technologies, specifically drone operations.
This research employs a descriptive-analytical and documentary method. It utilizes chain of transmission (Sanad) validation and Fiqh al-Hadith for textual analysis. Furthermore, jurisprudential principles such as isolating the rationale and eliminating specificities are applied to extend traditional concepts to modern scenarios.
Chain validation indicates the narration is at the highest level of authenticity (Sahih or Hasan kal-Sahih). The analysis reveals that Amir al-Mu’minin’s (AS) use of the exception “Insha’Allah” in the narration constitutes a specialized exclusion (Khuruj-e Takhassusi) from lying, creating a “verbal double entendre”. Applying jurisprudential principles extends this permissibility from words to actions, establishing the concept of “practical Tawriyah.” Consequently, modern instances like electronic deception and decoy drones are recognized as legitimate reproductions of the Infallibles’ (AS) conduct.
Modern military deception tactics, such as the deployment of decoy drones and electronic warfare, are jurisprudentially legitimate under the maxim of “Al-Harb Khud’ah”. However, their legitimacy is strictly conditional upon remaining within the bounds of practical Tawriyah, avoiding the jurisprudential red line of “Ghadr” (treachery/perfidy), and adhering to the “principle of distinction” to ensure the protection of civilians during deception operations.
