Abstract

Al-Muḥaddith al-Baḥrānī, in addressing the reconciliation of conflicting traditions, presents a set of distinctive viewpoints whose methodological identification and criteria play a significant role in achieving a more precise understanding of taqiyyah-related narrations. The importance of examining the grounds for interpreting narrations in light of taqiyyah lies in the fact that the sayings of the Imams (peace be upon them) constitute a primary source for deriving juridical rulings; thus, neglecting this dimension may lead to the dismissal of numerous traditions due to apparent contradictions. Among the causes of such discrepancies, according to al-Muḥaddith al-Baḥrānī, is the deliberate issuance of divergent statements by the Maʿṣūmīn (peace be upon them) for the preservation of the Shīʿī school under harsh socio-political conditions—a phenomenon that gave rise to taqiyyah-based narrations.

Employing a descriptive–analytical method and relying on library sources, this article investigates the causes of interpreting hadiths through the lens of taqiyyah from the perspective of al-Muḥaddith al-Baḥrānī in al-Ḥadā’iq al-Nāḍirah, and concludes by addressing the critiques and objections raised against this viewpoint.

The approach of al-Muḥaddith al-Baḥrānī toward taqiyyah-related narrations can be discerned through his citation of the opinions of Imāmī and Sunnī jurists and his examination of their commentaries in the context of narrations explicitly or implicitly indicating taqiyyah.

A close study of his works—particularly al-Ḥadā’iq al-Nāḍirah—reveals that the most significant criteria for interpreting narrations as taqiyyah-based include: contradiction with rational or transmitted proofs, conformity with the views of the Sunnī majority, and the narrator’s residence among Sunnīs under politically oppressive circumstances.
